Clontarf Extension

This project brief was to provide our client with a new dining and kitchen area to replace the existing cramped and outdated facilities. In addition we were to provide a new downstairs accessible shower room to future proof the house.

One of the key considerations for our clients was to try and not effect the well proportioned existing living room to the rear of the house.

There are numerous examples of new extensions that block up the existing rear facing room. This somewhat defeats the purpose of the extension as the existing room becomes a dark space within the middle of the extended house.

With this in mind we proceeded to create a courtyard between the existing house and the new extension. This allowed the existing rear living room to remain unchanged. The courtyard then provided a focal point of daylight to both the existing house and the new extension.
